The Yoga Church Annual Retreat is a place where we can gather together as a spiritual community with the intention of deepening our spiritual practice. It’s a place where we can explore spirituality as the embodied human beings that we are. Where we can explore the mystery of God within us. Where we can move, breathe, and chant together. Rest in silence together. Build self-awareness and work for peace and justice in the world.

I have been to several retreats in my life and I know how much the details matter. How hard is the travel to get there? What’s the location like? Where do I sleep? How’s the food? What kind of space do we meet in? Lodging, food, space, surroundings… These details can support or hinder our ability to retreatto withdraw from daily lifeand experience rest, learning, and community. With this reality in mind, I chose our retreat location carefully. We will be gathering together at the beautiful 250-acre Islandwood on Bainbridge Island.

You can fly into Seattle and then take the ferry across the sound as you transition from daily life into retreat. You can choose a single or double room. Each room has a private bath and is appointed with thoughtful details, including a window above each bed that invites in the natural setting. We’ll have our own private dining room, where we’ll share 12 meals together (Sunday dinner through Thursday lunch) with menus designed by Chef Jim White featuring local, organic, and sustainably-sourced ingredients, simply prepared and thoughtfully presented.

We have a wonderful shared gathering space in which to practice and learn. One evening we’ll have a fire and some of us might find our way to the art studio. You can walk the trails and enjoy the lush, green, Pacific Northwest.

Our Retreat

We will arrive on Sunday evening. We’ll eat and take some time to settle in. We’ll stretch our bodies after travel. We’ll formally begin with an opening circle designed to help us come together as a community and to ground our spirits in the space. We’ll spend three full days in practice, reflection, nature wandering, and ritual. We’ll explore creation storiesfrom wisdom traditions and from our life. We’ll reconnect with the 5 elements that make up our world and our bodies. We’ll explore concepts like roots, ground, home, spirit, being. We’ll experiment with symbols of meaning and work to craft authentic symbol systems to support our ongoing spiritual practice and life. On Thursday morning we’ll have a closing circle to anchor our time together more deeply within us as we prepare to transition back to normal life. We’ll share a final meal and head back across the water.

Retreats are something set apart—a time of sabbath and renewal. But it’s important that aspects of the nourishment of retreat follow us back into the normal patterns of life. Through the Yoga Church Sunday Sermons we’ll keep the conversation going. And for those who are interested, I’m happy to help in the formation of spiritual friendships for ongoing support and connection. We will talk more about this at the retreat.

Investment

We can retreat in this beautiful location while our learning and efforts are supported by the hospitality of Islandwood’s wonderful staff. (Seriously, one of my favorite things about being on retreat is knowing that I don’t have to think about grocery shopping, cooking, or dishes!) Plus, our dollars will support the mission of Islandwood—a non-profit environmental learning center created to improve access to meaningful, nature-based learning experiences for the region’s children. It’s an amazing place and I can’t wait to be there with you in July.
